Introduction
English is an essential subject for students in China nowadays due to globalization and its practical use in everyday life. Thus, students aim to excel in their English language skills in order to achieve academic success. However, learning a foreign language may present numerous difficulties due to the diversity of its grammar structures and the intimidating vocabulary load. Therefore, Chinese students tend to memorize and store the lesson's content in their minds. The information they store in their memory could either be correct or incorrect, depending on their perception, understanding, and study habits. An incorrect memorized English language lesson would induce students to experience delays in their learning, which could cause confusion, miscommunication, and low academic performance. This report reviews channel effects on poor English language memorization by secondary school Chinese students.
Channel Impact on Incorrect Memorization
For students to process information correctly, there are two significant channels of information through which the brain receives information: the linguistic and visual channels. Channel effects are the cognitive phenomena whereby the attention of the brain to the linguistic or visual information affects the accuracy of the information being memorized. In simple terms, incorrect usage of the two channels can affect the quality of memory storage and learning process.
For instance, although accurate teaching and a correct understanding of phonemic sounds aid in English language memorization, it's the students' potential to relate the phonetic sound to the proper word that enables them to endure memorization. The channel effects that occur in the linguistic channel involve learning the proper pronunciations of words, which allows students to verbalize and recite the words correctly. On the other hand, channel effects in the visual channel involve understanding written letters, visualizing the shape of words, and correlating their meanings. For some students, the visual channel may be more effective in memorizing English words rather than the linguistics channel. Thus, they should focus more on the graphical representation of the words than the pronunciation of the words. This information processing strategy is dependent on the student's learning strategy and method of retaining information.
Furthermore, studies demonstrate that merely repeating a word may not be effective in English language memorization. For instance, in the Chinese language, the word 快乐(kuài lè) translates to happiness. The Pinyin pronounces kuài in the 4th tone, while lè is pronounced in the first tone. However, if a student were to memorize this word by merely repeating the or spelling, they may fail to grasp the intended meaning of the word. They can improve their memorization by relating the word to the intended emotion, thereby cementing the word to long-term memory.
The Role of Context and Relevance in English Language Memorization
Understanding the context and relevance of each English lesson is critical to successful memorization. For instance, sentence structuring is vital in English the language as it depends on context and relevance. The accuracy of English sentence structure relies on the correct arrangement of words, subject-verb agreement, and accurate punctuation. If students fail to understand the relevance of a particular word or a sentence structure, the whole lesson will lose its intended meaning.
The Importance of Emotion in English Language Memorization
Emotion's role in English language memorization is highly underrated in Chinese education settings. Research shows that English is more likely to be memorized if there is an emotional and personal attachment to the words learned. Students who are passionate about a specific aspect of the language they are learning will be more efficient in memorizing new words and terms.
Conclusion
In conclusion, students who show a stronger preference for one channel of learning information may result in errors during English language memorization. Consequently, students may experience delay in their learning, causing confusion, miscommunication, and low academic performance. Therefore, the teacher should evaluate each student's learning style and channel preference. Personalized teaching methods that consider individual learning styles will be more effective in improving English language memorization. Moreover, the role of context, relevance, and emotion should be taken into account to enhance the quality of English language memorization. Educators should also aim to implement creative and interactive learning activities to deepen students' understanding and memorization of the English language.
