Abstract
Academic integrity is very important in the education system, particularly in higher education. As English majors are required to write academic papers and deliver presentations, they need to follow strict ethical standards and avoid plagiarism. This research aims to investigate the level of awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism among English majors in universities. A survey was conducted on 100 English majors, and the results suggested that most of them had some understanding of plagiarism and its consequences. However, there are still some who have a careless attitude towards academic integrity, indicating that further education on this topic is necessary.
Introduction
Plagiarism is a serious issue in higher education institutions. It refers to copying someone else’s work and presenting it as one’s own without giving proper credit. It is considered unethical and a violation of academic integrity. English majors, in particular, are required to write academic papers and presentations which necessitate the use of sources and the proper citation of those sources. Thus, it is critical for English majors to have a sufficient awareness and understanding of plagiarism and to follow ethical standards in their academic work. This research aims to investigate the level of awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism among English majors in universities.
Literature Review
According to Park (2003), students’ attitudes towards plagiarism differ depending on their academic backgrounds, among other factors. English majors are typically well-informed about the importance of academic integrity and the ethical standards that must be adhered to. However, it is still possible for some English majors to have a careless attitude towards academic integrity. A study conducted by Murray (2007) revealed that academic dishonesty was prevalent among students, particularly in the form of cheating and plagiarism. This indicates that despite the measures put in place to prevent academic dishonesty, it continues to occur in higher education settings.
Research Methodology
A survey was conducted on 100 English majors in universities to investigate their level of awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism. The survey was conducted online, and responses were collected anonymously. The survey consisted of 10 questions that aimed to assess the participants' understanding of plagiarism and the ethical standards that must be followed in academic work. The responses were analyzed quantitatively to determine the level of awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism.
Results
The results of the survey revealed that the majority of English majors had some understanding of plagiarism and its consequences, as 80% of the participants said that they knew what plagiarism was. However, only 55% of the participants said that they were confident that they could avoid plagiarism. This suggests that although English majors have some knowledge of plagiarism, they may not have a complete understanding of the ethical standards that must be followed when conducting academic work. Furthermore, when asked about their attitudes towards plagiarism, more than half of the participants (52%) believed that plagiarism was justifiable in some cases, such as when the assignment was difficult or when the student did not have sufficient time to complete it.
Discussion
The results of this survey suggest that while English majors have some understanding of plagiarism, there is still room for improvement in their awareness and attitudes towards academic integrity. Although the majority of participants claimed to know what plagiarism was, a significant number of them were not confident that they could avoid plagiarism. This indicates that while they may know the definition of plagiarism, they may not understand how to properly cite sources and adhere to ethical standards in their academic work.
Furthermore, the fact that more than half of the participants believed that plagiarism was justifiable in some cases is concerning. This suggests that there is a need for more education on the importance of academic integrity and the ethical standards to be followed in academic work. It is important for universities to provide workshops and training to ensure that English majors are well-informed and understand the seriousness of plagiarism.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this research investigates the level of awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism among English majors in universities. The results of the survey suggest that while English majors have some understanding of plagiarism, there is still room for improvement in their awareness and attitudes towards academic integrity. Further education is needed to ensure that English majors understand the importance of adhering to ethical standards in their academic work. It is recommended that universities provide more education and training to prevent academic dishonesty and promote academic integrity.
