Women on the Way to the Roof of the World
Alison Levine has ever gone through heart surgery twice and Midge Cross is someone who has diabetes and is in struggle with breast cancer. Neither of them is the type to let those difficulties stand in the way of their adventuresome spirit, so they headed for the Roof of the World. They were part of a team that set out last week to e the first group of American women to reach the top of Mount Everest. The other three women are Coloradans Lynn Prebble, Jody Thompson and Kimberly Clark. Cross had to turn back at 24,000 feet because of altitude sickness. Had she reached the summit, the 58-year-old grandmother would have been the oldest woman to do so. The other four were pushing on, hoping to reach the summit within the next couple of days.
Cross agreed that they were women who had a certain attitude, pointing out that they weren’t interested in leading safe, predictable lives. So they trained for months, although they were aware that 180 people had died trying to climb the world’s highest mountain, es in at 29, 035 feet.
Tuesday afternoon, they made it finally! The mental toughness helped to realize their dreams.
