Abstract The Anthology of Liaozhailiqu (hereinafter referred to as Liao) is written by Pu Songling, a famous litterateur of Qing Dynasty and people of Shandong province, with Shandong dialects. It was finished in the early period of Qing Dynasty. It, characterized by the abundant usages of ordinal numbers, has essential research value. The thesis, taking Liao as the object of study, summarizes expressions and features of the ordinal so as to probe into the usages of Chinese ordinal categories. The main content in this thesis is divided into the following parts: The first part gives the research goal and significance and has confessed the thesis selected topic basis, current situation and ings of researches on the ordinal categories in Liao, as well as the definition of ordinal category. The second, third, and forth part makes a classification about the ordinal categories in Liao. Taking the techniques of expression as the standard of classification, we discuss the three ways of ordinal expression: lexical expression, grammatical expression, and unmarked expression; then divide each way further into different subcategories for description. The fifth part summarizes the expression ways of ordinal categories in Liao and sums up its characteristics in using ordinal words, namely, from the perspective of the ordinal expressions, number-including ordinal expression is open and prolific but heavily relying on the sequence; non-number ordinal expression is fixed with higher frequency of applying one-syllable sequences than grammatical expressions. Application frequency of ordinal words expressions is higher than that of ordinal grammatical expressions. The usage of “er”(means two) and “liang”(means two) in Liao is different from the usage in modern Chinese.
