IV. Criteria of Translation
1 支谦(25-220)--emphasizing the conveyance of the original meaning and expressiveness of the translation.
2 道安(314-385)--warned translators on guard against五失本(five ways of losing the original essence in translation, emphasized the importance of following the original text faithfully.
3. 马建忠(1845-1900)--the translator should carefully read and analyze the source text to get the real meaning, the structure, the style, the spirit, the tone, and the sound effect before he begins to translate. The effect of the translation on the target readers should be the same of that of the original text on its readers.
