His first novel, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest(1962) focuses onMcMurphy who, through his irrepressible power, helps the patients, particularly Bromden, find the self-confidence and courage to rebel against the sterile, mechanistic, manipulative forces represented by Big Nurse. It demonstrates the progress of their struggle in the technological world, in which nature, individual, and mechanical oppressive societyare in ubiquitous consistsoffive parts. Chapter One is the introductory part of the thesis, which firstly gives a brief introduction to Ken Kesey and his novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest,then makes a general literature review about the previous studies on Ken Kesey and his works, and finally, on the basis of the literature review, summarizesthe thematic concern of the present study through the layout description of the thesis. Chapter Twofocuses on the double alienation caused by the dehumanized social order in the ward through the analysis of the character Nurse Ratched. On the one hand, as the Big Nurse governing the patients in the ward, Ratched tries to impose the order required by bine over the patients, deprives the patients of their identitiesand individualities by exercising the power, control, punishments and oppressions over the patients, and finally misshapesthe patients into obedient automatons.
