Advances in Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology 100 - Future Biotechnology - J. Nielsen - Springer 2005.pdf
Foreword The “Volume 100” anniversary gives me the chance to reflect on our essful series “Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology”. With the support of Springer, Professor Fiechter and Professor Ghose de- cided in 1971 to “stimulate many more talents to contribute through basic researchdisseminationofknowledgetotheyettoemergehybriddisciplineof biochemical engineering”. The thirty-five fruitful, dynamic, and remarkable years of this series are proof of the strength of their vision. Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology has provided a tre- mendous impetus on research and fruitful scientific exchange in this area. While the number of journals, series and books on biotechnology grew expo- nentially in this period, the “Advances” were always on the forefront of research and knowledge. Looking back, it is surprising that many of the “hot topics” of today were initiated in the early seventies (. plant cell biotechnology, Vol. 2 (1972) and mammalian cell technology, Vol. 3 (1974)). The initial idea to review the actual state of knowledge in this series was and is still a key for ess for the Advances. While the first volumes contained different chapters with actual topics in biotechnology, we decided in 2000 to organize special topic volumes. Thus, each volume is dedicated to a certain area of modern biotechnology. I am proud that we were even able to convince the founding editors to contribute to these special volumes: Prof. A. Fiechter: History of Biotechnology (Vol. 69, 70 in 2000) and Prof. . Ghose: Biotech- nology in India (Vol. 84, 85 in 2003). I heartily thank both in the name of our munity for having this wonderful dream about this Springer series. I also would like to take this opportunity to thank the editorial board mem- bers for their excellent work, and to express my appreciation to all of the authors. Over 50 well known scientists served on the board to improve the quality of this series from one volume t
