The protagonists in the novel are living in a changing society at the turn of the 20th century. In this period, America developed at an amazing speed in economy and produced abundant goods. It shifted from a production-oriented society to a consumption-oriented one with the development of industrialization and urbanization. American society put unprecedented emphasis on consumption and propagandized for it
great efforts. The story in the novel took place at the turn of the 20th century when America was experiencing dramatic changes, which would inevitably extend influences on its characters.
