Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) Description : This isa 30-item brief assessment of mental status which includes orientation to time and place, ability to name two objects, follow a 3- mand, repeat and recall three words, subject serial 7’s, write a sentence and copy intersecting pentagons. The maximum score is 30 and the minimum score is 0. It tests five areas of cognitive function: orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recall, and language. A score of 23 or lower is indicative of cognitive impairment. The MMSE takes only 5-10 minutes to administer and is, therefore, practical. The MMSE is typically used as screening instrument to separate patients with cognitive impairment from those without it. In addition, when used repeatedly the instrument is able to measure changes in cognitive status. However, the tool is not able to diagnose the cause for changes in cognitive function and should not replace plete clinical assessment of mental status.
