On the O rigins of English Idioms parison differences between English and Chinese idioms I. Introduction As an English learner, we study English everyday; learning its literary work s, grammatical functions, use them and soon. Sometimes , we co me cross some sentences that we c an’t understand, such as,“T here isa black sheep ”or“Don’tbea bad apple ”,“go over my head ”,“Don’tput your problems at my doorstep ”,“j ust bear with me ”,“h eap coal of fire onone ’s head ” etc. Of course we prehend the meaning of every single word. Why did we me et such a difficult y to understand them? So th ey represent native English idioms! How can we understand the phrases mean ing? “ There isa black sheep ”( 害群之马),“ go over my head ”( 无法理解)( 乔恩( Choong,G,G. ) ), “ Don’tput your problems at my doorstep ”( 归咎于我)(卢思源,2006 ,) ,“j ust bear with me ”( 容忍我),“h eap coal of fire onone ’s head ”( 以德抱怨). In fact English idioms are not strange tous inour study and daily life, we c an often mention or use them with which we are familiar .Idioms are fixed phrases that go through the test of history and cannot be treated separately, they are a kind of language that Britain and America use to express their idea s.
