二、课程简介
本课程作为英语专业选修课，为大学本科二年级或三年级学生开设，在具备较好的英语语言技能之后，提升学生欣赏和应用英语语言的能力。为更好地欣赏英语文学和英语论文写作打下坚实基础，同时，为其以后工作中恰当得体地应用各种文体奠定基础。
本课程比较系统的介绍英语常用修辞手法、词的修辞、句子的修辞、篇章的修辞、以及基本的英语修辞理论。本课程通过对经典修辞实例的分析和品读，使学生更准确地理解作者的写作意图、文体风格和写作技巧，从而提高阅读能力和文学欣赏水平，同时，通过对对经典修辞实例的分析和品读，提高学生英语口、笔表达的得体性和艺术性，使之对词语的选用更加贴切、句子表义更加清晰和生动；为篇章写作和毕业论文写作打下基础。本课程具有较强的实践性和实用性。
融入课程思政的途径是体现在举例之中，增加毛泽东诗词的举例，增加中国古代名家的辩论理论及其应用，增加中国诗词的优秀英译版欣赏。
English Rhetoric is an optional course for sophomores or juniors of English major. This course is intended to enhance the students’ competence in understanding, appreciating, reading and writing in English literacy after they have acquired intermediate level of English proficiency. It is also designed to lay a solid foundation for their thesis writing and application of appropriate use of English in their future work.
English Rhetoric provides a systematic introduction of English rhetoric devices, lexical rhetoric, syntactic rhetoric, paragraph rhetoric, textual rhetoric and some preliminary theories in rhetoric. These contents shall be fulfilled by analysis and appreciation of classic examples of English literature to enable students better understand the writers’ writing intentions, styles and techniques. As a result, it will enhance the students
’ reading comprehension and literary criticism. Meanwhile, the analysis and appreciation of classic examples of English masterpieces will also improve the students’ competence in writing and speaking with appropriateness and aesthetics. They will be more aware of the choices of words, varieties, clarity, and emphasis of sentences, unity and coherence paragraphs and texts. Therefore, this course serves to lay a solid foundation for writing, especially, thesis writing. The teaching approach of this course makes it practical and useful.
