邻水县手掌木偶戏由原么滩镇人陈永清首创。1850年，陈永清从福建学成手掌木偶戏，回到邻水县，对此技艺进行了改造和创新，形成了具有川东风格的“邻水手掌木偶戏”。到了老年，陈永清将这一绝活传给了外侄张邦军，也就是张贤光的父亲。

在父亲的悉心传教下，聪明伶俐的张贤光很快学会了不少木偶戏剧，一次，在离家不远的村里演出，为了考验他，父亲突然叫他上台演出，平时在台下很熟悉的戏剧段子，不想到了台上一表演，观众一笑，他大脑里就一片空白，词全忘了。
