第一节 什么是新闻摄影
一、新闻摄影概念的两层内涵
新闻摄影的概念有广义和狭义两个层次的内涵。广义的新闻摄影，泛指一切用摄影手段报道新闻的活动，包括用照相机拍摄照片，用摄影机拍摄新闻纪录电影，以及用摄像机拍摄电视新闻这三大类用影像报道新闻的手段。现代化的摄影手段，如手机上的拍摄功能、个人和家庭使用的DV摄录机等，因为小巧灵活、方便使用，也参与到新闻摄影报道中来。例如2004年媒体对印度洋海啸的报道中，许多照片和电视台使用的录像带，都是现场游客拍摄提供的。狭义的新闻摄影，则专指以相机为工具，以摄影图片为手段，以报纸、杂志和网络为载体的新闻摄影报道活动。
在英语中，和新闻摄影相关的词汇有几个。《美国ICP摄影百科全书》中收录的有新闻摄影(news photography)、报刊摄影(press photography)和报道摄影(photojournalism)等。它们分别被这样表述：
News photography——“是报道某些事件和与这些事件有关的个人或知名人物。……新闻摄影作为摄影报道的一个组成部分，可包括重要新闻(政治、经济或社会上的突发事件)、特写新闻(文化上有重要意义的引人人胜的或一般生活方式的主题)，以及某些记录报道性新闻。”
Press photography ——“报刊摄影，或定期刊物所需要的那种照片摄制，可分为三个有时互相交叉的基本类型：‘突发’或爆炸性新闻摄影、特写摄影和摄影报道。”
形成完整、丰满的印象，从而全面、准确地理解和接受信息。
作为独特的大众传播手段，图文结合的新闻摄影，是构成报纸、杂志和网络媒体的基本要素和有机组成部分，是视觉媒体报道新闻的重要手段。
二、纪实摄影(documentary photography)
是和新闻摄影紧密相关的摄影形式
纪实摄影具有特定的内涵。“纪实摄影是摄影家对现时世界中具有社会历史意义的人与人、人与环境间的关系作相对全面的诚实生动的描写，以导致观众对被描写对象的关注与正确认识的一种摄影形式。
