班固自幼聪慧，九岁能诵读诗赋，十三岁时得到当时学者王充的赏识，建武二十三年（公元47年）前后入洛阳太学，博览群书，穷究九流百家之言。建武三十年，其父班彪卒，自太学返回乡里。居忧时，在班彪续补《史记》之作《后传》基础上开始编写《汉书》，至汉章帝建初中基本完成。修成第一部纪传体断代史《汉书》。
《汉书》：又称《前汉书》，由我国东汉时期的历史学家班固编撰，是中国第一部纪传体断代史，“二十四史”之一。《汉书》是继《史记》之后我》、《后汉书》、《三国志》并称为“前四史”。
