三、保护区的显著特征
河流上游自然保护区具有八个方面的鲜明特征：
（一）历史悠久
河流上游自然保护区具有悠久的历史渊源。体现出古人朴素自然的生态保护意识，使这里的自然生态、野生动植物种群因此而得到保护。从这个意义上讲，这里应该是中国最早、最具有实际内涵的自然保护区域，这在世界自然保护史上也是非常难得和具有开创意义的。

（二）位置独特
河流上游自然保护区在来自西伯利亚冷高压气流的作用下，就像被一台功率巨大的鼓风机吹动，沿着此正北方向三条风沙通道，居高临下压向当地地区。保护区浩瀚的森林形成了一道天然绿色屏障，阻挡着风沙对此的危害。
（三）资源丰富
河流上游自然保护区的植被分属于针叶林、落叶阔叶林、落叶阔叶灌丛、亚高山草甸等四个植被类型及25个群系。根据近几年的科学考察，保护区有高等植物136科468属1016种，%，有大型真菌24科60多种，这些植物和菌类中蕴含有大量药用、观赏、园林、野果、野菜、蜜源等资源植物种类。保护区有列入保护名录的植物20科22种，近期的考察中还发现该地区植物新记录种7种。
