Tomato
Lycopersicon esculentum belongs to the family Solanaceae and is related to brinjal. It is one of the most popular and widely grown vegetables in the world ranking second in importance to potato in many countries.
Tomato is believed to be the native of tropical America. From tropical America it spread to other parts of the world in the sixteenth century.
Today, tomato is one of the most important vegetable crops allover the world. Among vegetables, it is one of the richest source of vitamin C and iron. Therefore, from nutrition point of view, tomato is a very wholesome vegetable. Because of its wide industrial uses, cultivation of tomato is more profitable than that of other vegetables.
No special soils
Tomato is grown in practically all types of soils from light sandy to heavy clay.
Warm and no frost
Tomato pollen grains germinate best at °C, nearly as well at 21°C, poorly at 10°C, and very poorly at 38°C. Thus both high and low temperature interfere with the setting of fruits. Tomato withstands drought well but fruits are subject to blossom end rot and to growth cracks if moisture supply follows drought. It cannot be grown essfully in regions of higher rainfall.
