It began along time ago, around 1860, in Gloucestershire, England. The daughters of the Duke of Beutfout were playing popular English game called battledore and shuttlecock in the Badminton House. To make the game more interesting, they strung up a string across the hall. The aim of this made-up game was to keep a shuttle in the air by hitting it to each other over the string. Someone suggested that it would be more fun if they hit the shuttle away, instead of passing it to the person across the string. With that suggestion, badminton was created.
But there is also proof that badminton has existed since Ancient Greece, early man’s versions of the game, sometimes using a foot instead of a racquet, have been depicted on pottery as early as 3,000 years ago, in China.
How did badminton start?
1860年前后,羽毛球运动首先在英国的格洛斯特郡兴起。伯尔特福特公爵的女儿们在伯明顿楼玩当时英国很流行的板羽球游戏。为了增加游戏的趣味性,他们在大厅中间拉了一根绳。他们原意是想让站在绳两边的人互相把球打给对方,并尽量使球不落在地上。后来有人提议说如果尽量使对方接不到球而不是接到球,游戏将更有趣。由于这个建议,一项称为伯明顿(中文译为羽毛球badminton )的运动产生了。
但还有证据证明羽毛球运动自古希腊时代起就存在了。从3,000多年前的中国陶器上的画来看,当时的人使用脚而不是球拍来‘打’。
