The Spread of Chinese Tea
As Buddhist priests(佛教高僧) start to move around China, the spread of cultivation and tea drinking follows them.
Fujian tea spread to western Europe

Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford(安娜贝德芙七世), who created the custom of afternoon tea in 1840.
Usually had supper at around eight o’clock in the evening .
A tray of tea, bread, butter and cake to her room during the late afternoon.

It is a small meal, not a drink. Traditionally it consists of Tea served with either of the following:

Freshly baked scones (烤饼) served with cream(奶油) and jam (果酱)
Afternoon tea sandwiches.
