2012年5月 On Marriage Attitudes Between Elizabeth and Charlotte Abstract Jane Austen is a famous female novelist in the romantic period of England. After years of living in the English countryside, the rural life is the main theme of her novels. Her novels are mainly about the country young people's love and marriage story, in which the men are always wealthy, handsome and elegant squire; women are full of wit, sharp observation and tenderness. Pride and Prejudice is no exception. The novel shows colorful, vivid plicated relationships between the characters, describes a couple of men and women’s love story, reflects the marital theme, marital status and value orientation in the eenth century of England. Jane Austen depicts five different love and marriage relationships in Pride and Prejudice, but these five different love and marriage stories lead to different degrees of marriage happiness. In the paper, the author will mainly focus on the two different marriage attitudes between Elizabeth and Charlotte Lucas and analyze the cause of their marriage attitudes through examples as well parative analysis, and try to tell readers such a conclusion: different marriage attitudes result in different life. Elizabeth bases her marriage on mutual respect and understanding while Charlotte Lucas builds her marriage on money, social rank and status. As a result, the former harvests happiness while the later only gets a shelter.
