Chapter1 Brief Introduction Four phases in the construction of the city wall
The first phase of the project was to build imperial palace and rebuild the City Wall of the Southern Tang Dynasty. The second phase of the project was to extend the old city wall of Yingtian Prefecture to the back of the Yangtze River ,the third phase of the project was to build three city gate castles from including Saushan (present Shuixi Gate ),Treasure (present Zhonghua Gate and Tongji Gate and ten other city gates as fourth phase was to continue the outer wall.

The entire project took 21 years from beginning in 1366 pletion in cost 6 million auunces of gold .Shen Wansan,a wealthy man ,donated one third of the expenses The emperor recruited about 200000 labors san craftsmen from 125 counties of Jiangsu ,Anhui ,Jiangxi,Huibei and Hunan province which provided 350 million bricks for the project.

There were 350 million bricks specially made for the wall by these provinces .Each of the bricks is 40 centimeters long, 20centimeters wide and 10centimeters thick with a weight of 10 kilos, all in gray .For the quality control, all the bricks were molded with the names of supervisors, brick-makers and firemen as well. as the date of baking .
