Multiple covalent bonds
Covalent bonds and valence electrons
The number of covalent bonds formed by an atom of an element depends on the number of electrons in its valence or outer shell.
Elements in the same group in the periodic table have the same valence
Electron configuration. Consequently, they will tend to form the same
number of covalent bonds.

The number of covalent bonds
A covalent bond in which 2 electrons are shared is called a single covalent bond and it can be represented by a line drawn between the atoms.
A covalent bond in which 4 electrons are shared is called a double covalent bond and it can be represented by a line drawn between the atoms.
A covalent bond in which 6 electrons are shared is called a triple covalent bond and it can be represented by a line drawn between the atoms.
