In the early 20th century in the United States, slavery covered the whole country like a dome. Black slaves suffered harshly from hunger and maltreatment.

The slaves were often separately traded to different masters hence they could never gather with their families. To make things worse, if slaves did not meet a kind plantation owner, they were more likely to be whipped to death.

Sectionalism refers to the different economies, social structure, customs and political values of the North and South. It increased steadily between 1800 and 1860 as the North, which phased slavery out of existence, industrialized, urbanized and built prosperous farms, while the Deep South concentrated on plantation agriculture based on slave labor, together with subsistence farming for the poor whites. The South expanded into rich new lands in the southwest(from Alabama to Texas).
As a result, the Civil War burst out in April, 1861

During the darkest period, many civil rights activists appeared. One of the most famous heroes was Martin Luther King.
Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president.
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's(the leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India) ess with non-violent activism, King had for a long time wanted to take a trip to India.
