Kobe Bryant’s Last Game
After 20 years in the league, the Lakers great bids farewell to the NBA tonight.
Twenty years ago, Kobe Bryant made his NBA debut as an 18-year-old fresh out of high school. He went scoreless in the game. Tonight, the five-time champion, third all-time leading scorer, and 18-time all-star will play the last game of his career in what is sure to be an emotional sendoff to the Los Angeles Lakers great.
Bryant, known by the moniker he gave himself, the Black Mamba, and the Lakers face off against the Utah Jazz at home to end the season. He announced his retirement in a poem last November, in part writing, “My heart can take the pounding / My mind can handle the grind / But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.”
He is the greatest performer of greatness in basketball history. Wednesday night’s 50-shot, 60-point showcase against the Utah Jazz was a flawless imitation of virtuosity.
This day has been named "Mamba Day" in Los Angeles subway station renamed "Bryant war." In a few hours before the start of the game, there are a large number of fans gathered outside the Staples Center, they chanted the name of Kobe Bryant, on the Signature Edition they want to leave Bryant said. Bryant gave the city five championship parade, and now the people of the city spontaneously gave Bryant memorative march.
Kobe shot more times against Utah than any player has hoisted the ball in a single game since the 1983–1984 season, the year the field goal attempt became an official statistic. He missed 28 times on Wednesday, two of his all-time record, but also ran of 17 points in a row in leading Los Angeles to eback victory. That would’ve been more impressive if anyone else in purple and gold had been granted the opportunity to score. But it was still remarkable that the 37-year-old Bryant made those shots down the stretch, and hilarious that he took them. His career finale was a 48-minute-long exercise in sublimation of the ego.
