Abstract As we know, over the years teaching of Chinese characters is always a very difficult part in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, as well as a very important part. Now the study on Chinese grammar and Chinese vocabulary is very perfect, but the study on teaching Chinese characters is still insufficient. Also Chinese character is a very difficult part when the foreigners learn Chinese. As the essential part of Chinese language, Chinese character is not only the tool to learn Chinese, but also a very important part of Chinese culture. So we should not ignore this part. This paper has summarized the main research of this field, and also analyzed the features, difficulties and current situation of Chinese characters teaching. The most popular teaching methods are also summarized in this paper. This paper is based on the study of “Liushu” to analysis the connection between “Pictographic, Self-explanatory Characters, pound Characters and phonogram” and the teaching of Chinese characters according to the motivations of Chinese characters, as well as the teaching experiences of the writer. The questions that we should pay attention to during the teaching have been pointed out. And the last part has discussed the relation between teaching Chinese characters and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages,which contains three very important parts:the teachers,the textbooks and the teaching methods. The purpose of this paper is to study and to prove that “Liushu” theories are helpful to teaching Chinese characters in Teaching Chinese as a second language.
