法国著名雕塑家罗丹应法国作家协会之邀制作巴尔扎克雕像。巴尔扎克矮胖肚圆，罗丹为此伤透了脑筋。经过长时间的琢磨，他决定着力刻画这位作家精神的美，雕塑出一位“本质的人”。罗丹为这雕像整整花了七年的时间。
这真诚的赞美引起了罗丹的沉思，他猛然操起身边的一柄斧子，朝着塑像的双手砍去，一双“奇妙而完美”的手消失了，学生们都惊呆了！罗丹却平静地解释说：“记住：一件真正完美的艺术品，没有一部分是比整体更重要的。”
