The Prohibition Movement is essentially considered as a social reform movement aimed at revive the traditional culture and values;
The 18th Amendment took effect on January 17th,1920,which means drinking in public is prohibited by law;
Reasons for Prohibition
1. Industrialization and urbanization brought American more opportunities and challenges ;but on the other hand, made class divisions more obvious and interpersonal relationships more unexpectable; as a result, the sense of responsibility to the family and society decreased , alcoholism and drunkenness disturbed the social order; every year ,more than 4000 people lost their lives because of public drunkenness
Reasons for Prohibition
are the places for gambling, prostitution, illegal trades, and alcohol is a must ;
development of wine trade and huge profits it brought made many officials involved and corruption flourished;
is against the puritan spirit because it spends much time and money, which harms human being not only physically, but also mentally; as a result, it poses an extreme threat to the Christ civilization;
While on December 5th, The 18th Amendment took effect ,which means the end of the Prohibition Movement
Why failed?
1. Difficult operation;
America has a coastline of 18000 miles, but when the 18th amendment took effect, there were only 1500 staff ,which means every one is responsible for searching a coastline of 12 miles, a harbor of 12 miles, 12 square miles of forest, 12 square miles of inland;
The mayor of New York claimed that if the 18th amendment were faithfully kept, he need to mobilize police force of a number as high as 250000;
