OxfordUniversityistheoldestuniversityin Britain andoneoftheworld ’smostfamous
institutionsof higher 。Itis ’s
locatedinOxford, England ,about80kilometersnorthwestof London.
Theuniversityhasover16 ,300students (1999—2000),almostaquarterofthese
studentsarefromoverseasandmorethan130nationalitiesarerepresented 。Itconsists
of35colleges,plusfiveprivatehallsestablishedbyvariousreligiousgroups 。Threeofthe
fiveprivatehallsareformenonly 。Ofthecolleges ,'sandSomervillearefor
women ,andtherestareformenandwomen 。
AtOxford,eachcollegeisa corporate bodydistinctfromtheuniversityandisgovernedby
itsownheadandfellows 。Mostfellowsarecollegeinstructorscalledtutors,andtherestare

electsitsownfellows,andselectsandadmitsitsownundergraduatestudents 。The
universityprovidessomelibraries ,laboratories ,andotherfacilities ,butthecollegestake
primaryresponsibilityfortheteachingandwell-beingoftheirstudents.
EachstudentatOxfordisassignedtoatutor ,who supervises thestudent'sprogramof
study,primarilythrough tutorials 。Tutorialsareweeklymeetingsofoneortwostudents

attendlecturesgivenbyuniversityteachers 。Studentschoosewhichlecturestoattendon
thebasisoftheirownspecialinterestsandontheadviceoftheirtutors 。

TheRhodesscholarship programenablesstudentsfromtheUnitedStates,Canada ,and
manyothernationstostudyatOxfordforaminimumoftwoyears 。TheBritishgovernment
grants Marshallscholarships tocitizensoftheUnitedStatesforstudyatOxfordandother
universitiesthatarelocatedinBritain 。
Thecompetitionforscholarshipsandgrantsis ,however,extremelystrongandthereare
usuallystrictrequirements 。Studentsshouldcheckcarefullythattheyare eligible toapply
foraparticularscholarshipbeforemakinganapplicationasmostoftheschemesare
restrictedtocertainnationalitiesand/orprograms.
ThestudentsandstaffatOxfordareactivelyinvolvedinover55initiatives (2001),
includingvisitstomorethan3 ,700schoolsandcolleges ,toencouragethebrightestand
beststudentstoapplytoOxford ,whatevertheirbackground 。
TheuniversityhasbeennamedtheUK'smostinnovativeuniversityintheLaunchit2001
competition,whichaimedtodiscoverwhichBritishuniversityhasdemonstratedthe
greatestachievementsin innovation andenterpriseacrossthebroadestrangeofactivity 。
InthenationalTeachingQualityAssessmentexercisesfor2000 ,Oxfordwasawardedtop
marksinsixoutoftensubjectsassessed.
