摄影作品艺术价值的高低，取决于其形象本身的艺术容量和创意性，作品的主题是靠独创的隐喻、象征、寓意及其相应的组合结构、色彩影调等等的艺术影象之造型来传达的，而把命名的作用提到不切实际的地位，往往给创作实践带来误导：
1、忽略艺术修养和形式创意。作者忽略自身“造型”艺术修养，创作中思考的不是如何影象之“造型”问题，而是关注于把什么拍下来，认为拍到了“精彩瞬间”、“重要题材”、“生活热点”就是艺术，寄希望于“点铁成金”的命名。画面要么平平庸庸，用意空洞、暧昧、晦涩，要么抄袭模仿，人云亦云。《大众摄影》近期特辟的“摄影诊所”批评了一些不成功之作，除拍摄功力之因外，不少作品也存在命名唬人、画面愚人的感受，如《心甘情愿》、《农祭》、《为四化努力学科学》、《迎接新世纪》、《路·鞋·人生》……，其实即使在一些大型的重要的影展上仍然也可找到此类命名“唬人”的作品。
2、冷淡法制观念。在当前“纪实摄影”热的冲动下，以为只要不干预对象，把现实场景拍摄下来，就是“纪实”，忘却了摄影的记录真实景象的特性，命名本身也存在“纪实”问题。有这样一幅作品，画面是寺庙门口有一位老和尚，用手摸着一个小孩子的头，作品取名为《俗根未尽》。说句实话，我如果是那位老和尚，我会把这位作者告上法庭的：你怎么会知道老和尚摸一下小孩子的头，就证明是俗根未
